Drinking Coffee protects your DNA from damage

02 October 2015

Coffee is more than a delicious drink that appeals to our senses and provides us with an energy boost in the morning. Studies have shown than coffee is very beneficial for our health and well being, as it protect us or lowers our risks to develop fatal diseases.

A new investigation published in The European Journal of Nutrition explains that regular coffee consumption can help strengthen our DNA. The research states that coffee can substantially lower the level of DNA strand breaks in white blood cells.

The study led by T. Bakuradze from the University of Kaiserslautern in Germany, recruited 84 healthy male participants and divided them in two groups. During four weeks, one group drank three cups of Dark Roast Arabica Coffee Blend daily, while the second group drank the same amount of water every day. Before and after consuming the beverage, spontaneous DNA strand breaks were measured. The research concluded that the volunteers that drank coffee experienced fewer breaks to the DNA strands in white blood cells, to be exact 27 percent less than the group that drank water.

These findings back up previous research that coffee consumption can decrease oxidation damage in white blood cells. This damage is caused by a disturbance in the balance between the production of free radicals and the ability to fight or counteract their destructive effects. Unregulated free radicals can harm important cell components, including its lipids, protein and DNA. The body is not always able to repair DNA damaged properly, which can cause mutation and rapid growth of abnormal cells, and eventually lead to cancer development.

Coffee contains thousands of bio-active components like vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Chlorogenic acid, one of the main components of coffee, is a powerful antioxidant that can inhibit DNA damage from free radicals. It protects our body against impaired cellular damage and lowers the risk of cancer.

Further studies will be necessary to verify such results. Still, it cannot be denied that coffee lowers DNA breakage and contributes to its integrity. These discoveries can aid us when it comes to our health. Coffee consumption is extremely beneficial. Just remember that it’s the Coffee Bean itself that has healthy connotations not the sugars and milks that you might add.
