What is Arabica Coffee?

Arabica coffee was first discovered growing naturally in the southwestern highlands of Ethiopia. Today, it is grown in many regions of the tropics such as Indonesia, Africa and Latin America, and it is exported worldwide gaining around 70% of the coffee bean market.

Arabica coffee grows in mountainous regions between the Tropic of Cancer and Capricorn at high altitude and relatively cool climate. It requires rich soil, moisture, evenly distributed rainfall, shade and sunlight. Arabica coffee plants are very susceptible to diseases, pests and weather conditions, thus they are very hard to tend. They have a low yield per plant and takes longer time to reach maturity. They are different types of Arabica coffee beans called cultivars but the most prominent are Typica, Bourbon, Caturra, Catuai, Catimor, Mundo Novo and Blue Mountain.

Arabica Coffee comes from a specific plant called “Coffee Arabica”. The grand majority of coffee used for human consumption worldwide comes from the Arabica plant and the Canephora plant, better known as Robusta. There are major differences between these two specifics plants, such as growing conditions, altitude, price, caffeine concentration and most importantly taste and quality.
