Guatemalan Coffee

Fri, Oct 2, 2015

Coffee was introduced to this Central American country in the mid 18th century by the Jesuits. They brought coffee to Guatemala as a decorative plant. In the 1830’s the Guatemalan government decided to boost coffee production by giving farmers economic incentives. From then on, coffee cultivation and exportation increased year by year.

In 1960, the “Producers Union”, which later became the National Coffee Organization (ANACAFE) was founded to represent all coffee growers in the country. Guatemalan coffee is grown in 8 divers regions (Acatenango, Antigua, Atitlan, Coban, Fraijanes, Huehuetenangos, New Oriente, and San Marcos). ANACAFE carefully monitors production, set high quality standards and flavor profile of each area. They certify the regional designation and approve its quality before the coffee is sold. Guatemala strongly supports their farmers and promotes their coffee globally. In fact, today Guatemala accounts for 2.5% of the world coffee production.

Guatemalan coffee is known for its sweetness, fruity tones, high acidity and robust body. It brews a bright and clean cup. This country produces remarkable coffee full of rich flavors. Guatemala may have the best coffee growing conditions in Central America thanks to its altitude, climate and volcanic soil. Micro lots are becoming more and more popular. Farmers want to provide bean traceability to its customers and have a deeper connection with them. In recent years, Guatemalan coffee growers have focused on producing specialty coffee. Guatemalan coffee is celebrated and valued by many. It has become one of the most demanding and search for coffees in the world.
