Cuban Coffee

Fri, Oct 2, 2015

Cuban coffee or Café Cubano is a type of espresso coffee that is made using darker roasts. It is similar to an Italian espresso but with a Latin twist. The difference is the sugar. By thoroughly beaten the sugar with a dash of coffee a majestic sweet foam layer or espumita is created in the coffee’s surface. Cuban coffee is twice as strong and potent than an American coffee and extremely sweet; it is so delicious so you can take it like a shot!.

Cuban Coffee originated in Cuba when the espresso machine was introduced to the island. Yet, there is nothing Cuban about the drink, apart from its brewing technique. The beans probably come from other Latin America countries; the coffee machine is not made in Cuba and the person who serves you the coffee might be from any other nationality expect Cuban.

This drink is fairly popular in large Cuban American populations such as South Florida. If you ever visit Miami you cannot leave the city without drinking a Cuban coffee, and if you are not planning a visit anytime soon follow our simple recipe and experience a domestic alternative for brewing Café Cubano.

You will need

A Moka pot, a mixing container, a spoon, sugar and of course your Full City roast Cubico Coffee of choice.

Preparation

1. Brew your Cubico coffee in a Moka pot.

2. Add around ¼ cup of sugar to a mixing container and pour a small amount of freshly brewed Cubico Coffee.

3. With a spoon beat vigorously the sugar and your Cubico Coffee until the mixture turns pale beige and most of the sugar is dissolve.

4. Slowly add the remainder of the coffee to the mixing container and continue to mix until the sugar dissolves. A thin sugary foam layer or espumita should form atop your Cubico Coffee.

5. Serve immediately into thimble-sized cups and enjoy!

It is the perfect drink after a comfort meal. For us, a meal is incomplete without our Cuban coffee. It makes all the difference. Try it; you will fall in love with coffee all over again.
