Cold Brew Coffee Recipe - How to Make a Cold Brewed Coffee

The cold brew coffee trend is growing year after year. Coffee drinkers are loosing their mind over this drink, and honestly we don’t blame them. Cold brew is a method to process coffee in room temperature or cold water for 12 to 24 hours. Making cold brew is not for everyone; it takes a long time; time is the main ingredient, but it’s well worth the effort.

While cold brew is consider a cold coffee, is should not be mistaken with regular iced coffee. Both brewing methods are completely different. Sure they both are ideal for summer and prefect to cool you down, yet they are not the same. The main difference is temperature. Cold brew is brewed cold or at room temperature, the coffee in never heated, whereas iced coffee, the coffee has been previously heated and then cool down with ice. Coffee aficionados are torn between these methods. For us its quite simple, just ask yourself what taste are you looking for.

1. Do you want a sweet, syrupy and smooth coffee with chocolate and caramel flavor? If so, try the cold brew method and select a Cubico Coffee from Latin America.

2. Do you prefer a coffee with rich floral and fruity qualities? If the answer is yes, then go for iced coffee and select a Cubico Coffee from Africa, preferably Ethiopia.

At Cubico Coffee, we are loyal cold brew fans. For us cold brew is better. You can appreciate the coffee’s flavor. It brews a smoother cup with milder acidity and mellow sweetness. Diluted and watery coffees it’s a thing of the past. Cold brew produces a low acid coffee that’s easy on your stomach. So, for all coffee lovers out there, who are looking for a friendly coffee, try cold brew, you can thank us later. Now let’s explore the magic behind this drink.

Note: There are many devices to make cold brew, some are simple like a jar, to a pitcher to a French Press others are more sophisticated, specifically intended for cold brewing such as Toddy, Bruer Slow Drip, Filtron, Hario Mizudashi and others. Cubico Coffee will use the Filtron, for us it’s the better option moneywise and taste wise.

You will need

Filtron set, grinder (optional), scale, cool filtered water and of course your Cubico Coffee of choice.

Preparation

  1. Insert the rubber stopper at the bottom of the device.
  2. Take the wool filter (pad) and fit it tightly in the bottom of the Filtron by pushing with your fingertips, make sure it’s done correctly. If the pad is new, give it a good rinse before used. Keep the pad refrigerated between uses.
  3. Place a paper filter in the coffee bowl. Secure it evenly.
  4. Weight 12 oz of your Cubico Coffee and ground coarsely. Skip this step if your Cubico Coffee is already grinded. The recipe can be scaled to your convenience based on 12 oz of coffee for 56 oz of water.
  5. Add your Cubico Coffee to the Filtron and give it a shake to level the coffee. Place the coffee guard on top of the coffee bed.
  6. Position the water bowl on top. Pour the 56 oz of cold filtered water carefully into the bowl.
  7. Set it in your refrigerated and let it brew for 12 to 24 hours. We recommend between 16 to 20 hours.
  8. Hold the Filtron over the decanter. Pull the rubber stopper to drain. This process should take around 30 to 45 minutes.
  9. Remove the Filtron from the decanter. Adjust the ratio to your taste, we recommend 1 part of coffee to 2 parts of water. Pour over ice, serve and cheers! The concentrate can last about 10 days in your fridge.

Cold brew is very versatile; you can mix it with anything. Top it with your favorite ice cream, add milk or even booze. So explore and create your own recipe.
